Flight Instruction
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the federal government agency which governs pilot privileges and requires specific flight experience. This experience includes a knowledge (written) test, and a practical (flight) test to earn a pilot's license (called a certificate). All of these requirements can be met through the completion of flight training at Compass 21 Aviation.
Our flight school is taught by our own talented flight instructors. In addition to offering the aircraft rental you need to complete your FAA flight requirements, we also stock aircraft and pilot supplies.
Earning a pilot's license is one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences you will ever have. Ask anyone who is already a pilot why they learned to fly and you'll hear words such as "challenge," "sense of accomplishment," "fun," "rewarding"... the list is endless. At Compass 21 Aviation, we have everything you need to fulfill your dream of becoming a pilot.
How long does it take? The length of time varies from student to student, and will depend on how many hours a week you dedicate to your training. The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight training, but we have found the average student needs about 50-65 hours before they reach the proficiency needed to pass a check-ride with the FAA. If you fly twice a week, you could anticipate earning your license in approximately 4 months or less.
What are the requirements to get a private pilot's license? Minimum age is 16 to "solo" and 17 to get your license.
The FAA requires a routine medical exam every 2-3 years.
You must be able to read, speak and understand English.
You will need to take a written exam.
You ill need to pass an oral and flight exam administered by the FAA.
Other requirements may apply if you are not a US citizen.
These costs are based on FAA minimums. The average student will take more flight time to develop the proficiencies needed to pass the FAA check-ride, and should therefore expect to pay for additional flight time of 10-20 hours.
Do I need to take a ground school class? All pilots are required to have ground instruction. For a majority of our students, ground training is done one-on-one with their flight instructor. Our experience has shown that this approach to ground instruction provides our students with the most thorough training. It also allows the student to progress at his or her own pace.
My schedule limits the times I can fly - is that a problem? Not at all. All of your training is done on your schedule, not ours. We are open seven days a week. Whether it's early morning, your lunch time, evenings, or weekends, our instructors are available to train with you.
When can I begin? You can start your training any time! Just call us at 704.482.6702 and tell us you are ready to begin. Before you know it you will be at the controls of an airplane on your very first flight lesson!
Can I rent aircraft after I finish my license? Yes! The knowledgeable pilots at Compass Aviation will be glad to help you explore the western piedmont and foothills of North Carolina. Advanced instruction is also available for instrument flying, multi-engine aircraft, and backcountry flying. We have three Cessna 172’s and one Cessna 150. They are all well equipped and are great training platforms. The two 172R models are equipped with dual Garmin GNS 430s.
I really want to become a pilot; how do I know if I have what it takes? Try our "Introductory Flight" with one of our certified flight instructors! This will include a pre-flight briefing, an opportunity to actually fly an airplane under the direction of your flight instructor, and a post-flight review. It's your opportunity to experience flying for yourself. The cost of the Introductory Flight is only $99, and it can be scheduled during any daylight hours. In most case we can schedule your flight with just a few hours' notice. Simply call us at 704-482-6702 and we'll be happy to schedule your flight.
